Who We Are

JIPANGA (CBO) is a grassroots community-based organization in Kisumu County, Kenya. Through our Kisumu Widows Empowerment Project (KWEP), we support widows facing the burden of grief, poverty, and social stigma.

Why JWEK Exists

Widowhood in Kenya—especially in Kisumu—often brings devastating economic and emotional consequences. Many widows become sole providers in a society where they lack legal protection, financial independence, and emotional support. Cultural practices like widow inheritance and sexual "cleansing" further expose them to exploitation and disease.

Kisumu is Kenya’s third largest city, home to over 900,000 people. Its main economic activities include subsistence farming, fishing, sugarcane farming, small businesses, and stone mining. Jipange Widows Empowerment operates within Kisumu East Sub-county—one of the most socioeconomically vulnerable zones.

Our Approach

Business & Entrepreneurship Skills Training (BEST)

We equip widows with skills in small-business management, planning, and bookkeeping. Each trained widow receives seed capital to start or boost a sustainable business.

Credit Program (CP)

Widows can access interest-free loans with flexible repayment terms to support their businesses and stabilize household income.

Shelter Program (SP)

We construct safe, dignified homes for widows living in dilapidated structures or lacking shelter altogether.

Psychosocial Support (PS)

Our trauma healing and counseling sessions offer widows emotional relief and direction. We also refer cases needing medical or mental health care.

Spiritual Uplift (SU)

Faith-based fellowships and reflection sessions help widows rediscover purpose and healing during grief.
